Proteas Men’s remarkable form rises, series win in England after 1998
The English skipper won the toss, but South Africa defended a five-run thriller and seized another series win — their first bilateral victory on English soil since 1998.
Decent start by Proteas openers Riyan Rickelton (35 off 33) and Aiden Markram (49 off 64), both played sensibly and added 73 runs for the opening partnership. Afterward, Matthew Breetzke continued his dream run, smashing his fifth consecutive historical fifty (85 off 77). Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs built a magnificent fourth-wicket foundation with a 147-run stand.
After Breetzke’s departure, Dewald Brevis came to the crease and rose to the occasion, opening his account with a phenomenal six over the rope. Half-centurion Tristan Stubbs looked composed with the bat, but a miscommunication led to his run-out, ending his clinical 55-run knock. Brevis then took charge, geared up the innings, and smashed 42 off just 20 balls. His harbinger hitting helped South Africa reach a massive total of 330/8.
On the other hand, England’s bowlers couldn’t stop the run flow in the death overs. Jofra Archer claimed 4 wickets, while spinner Adil Rashid delivered a fantastic spell (2/33 in 10 overs). But without support from the other end, England felt the absence of a fifth proper bowler.
While chasing the massive total, England didn’t get the start they expected. Jamie Smith fell for a golden duck, caught behind the stumps. Promising talent Jacob Bethell scored a brilliant 58 off 40, while Joe Root also made a steady fifty (61 off 72). Skipper Harry Brook and Jos Buttler tried to anchor the chase with a 69-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Buttler completed his fifty with hustling shots (61 off 51) before falling to Lungi Ngidi.
Jofra Archer’s cameo (27 off 14) stood the test of time in the chase, but England fell short by just five runs in the last over.
