A 26-year-old dashing and firebrand live pacer, Arshdeep Singh, currently is the leading wicket-taker for India in T20 internationals — 99 wickets in 63 matches with an economy of 8.29. In ODI cricket, the demo has been done but he has yet to nail his spot in ODIs along with Test cricket.

With and beyond the legends 

Why am I discussing these stats and about Arshdeep Singh? — A big issue and concern about the Indian bowling lineup, especially the fast-bowling unit, after seeing and experiencing Jasprit Bumrah’s availability in all three formats due to workload. If Bumrah is not there — touchwood — I want Bumrah to play every single game, whether it’s Test cricket or ODI/T20, for the nation. On the other hand, we can’t deny this great high-risk injury and his unavailability due to workload management. Currently, he’s 31. Bumrah has been a match-winner for India in all three formats for the past 6–7 years, and we’ve never doubted his determination and ability. But cricket is a never-ending process — with and beyond the legends.
As we all witnessed Arshdeep’s resilience and tenacity, it feels full of grit and guts under pressure, especially in 2024 South Africa.

If this young sensational talent gets the right exposure and opportunities, with proper backing and without the burden of unfair expectations and comparisons, he could be the next torchbearer of India’s fast-bowling future.

Of course, there is no replacement for our National Treasure — a once-in-a-generation talent.
